SEXTRASH – Funeral Serenade (1992)

Formed in 1987 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Sextrash emerged from the same notorious extreme metal underground that produced Sepultura, Sarcófago and Holocausto, developing a savage blend of death metal, thrash metal and first-wave black metal aggression. Their second full-length album, Funeral Serenade, originally released in 1992 through the legendary Cogumelo Records, followed their cult debut Sexual Carnage (1990) and demonstrated a more developed approach to songwriting without abandoning the band's primitive ferocity. Driven by Pussy Ripper's vicious vocals, aggressive guitar work, pounding drums and dark, chaotic atmosphere, the album combines relentless thrash rhythms with sinister melodies and heavier death metal passages. Tracks such as "Funeral Serenade", "Dead Man Visions", "Bizarre", "Wind Assassin", "Prohibited Angel" and "Torment of a Suicide" highlight the band's ability to balance raw brutality with more structured arrangements. While retaining the uncompromising spirit of Brazil's early extreme metal movement, Funeral Serenade reveals a band moving beyond the sheer chaos of its debut towards a sharper and more controlled musical identity. An essential underground recording for listeners exploring the Brazilian death/thrash tradition beyond its internationally recognised pioneers.
