CEMETARY – Black Vanity (1994)

Formed in Sweden in 1989 by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mathias Lodmalm, Cemetary emerged from the Swedish death metal underground before evolving into one of the early proponents of gothic metal. Released in 1994 through Black Mark Production, Black Vanity was their third studio album, following An Evil Shade of Grey (1992) and Godless Beauty (1993), and marked a decisive transition from death metal towards a darker, more melodic combination of gothic rock, doom metal and atmospheric metal. Featuring ten tracks, including "Bitter Seed", "Ebony Rain", "Hunger of the Innocent", "Black Flowers of Passion", "Sweet Tragedy" and "Rosemary Taste the Sky", the album explores melancholic guitar melodies, brooding bass lines, atmospheric keyboards and Lodmalm's distinctive vocal delivery, balancing aggressive passages with sorrowful, introspective arrangements. Recorded at Montezuma Recording in Stockholm, the album also features guest contributions from Christofer Johnsson of Therion and additional female vocals by Helena Öhberg. While retaining traces of the band's death metal origins, Black Vanity demonstrates a growing emphasis on emotional depth, dark romanticism and memorable songwriting. A significant recording in the development of Swedish gothic metal, particularly appealing to listeners of Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Anathema and early Katatonia.

Visual inspection shows the cassette and tape to be in generally acceptable condition and it appears playable, but due to the age and nature of used cassettes, playback quality cannot be guaranteed.

If the exposed tape strip appears dusty or dirty, it may require manual cleaning before playback. Experienced cassette collectors will generally be familiar with the appropriate cleaning methods and handling precautions for older tapes.
