BRUTAL TRUTH – Need To Control (1994)

Formed in New York City in 1990 by former Nuclear Assault and Anthrax bassist Dan Lilker, Brutal Truth became one of the most influential bands in American grindcore, combining the relentless aggression of extreme metal with hardcore punk intensity and an increasingly experimental approach to songwriting. Released in 1994 through Earache Records, Need To Control was their second full-length album, following the groundbreaking Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses (1992). Featuring Kevin Sharp on vocals, Brent McCarty on guitar, Dan Lilker on bass and Rich Hoak on drums, the album delivers 15 tracks of uncompromising grindcore characterised by violent blast beats, heavily distorted riffs, abrasive vocals and unpredictable shifts between frantic speed and crushing, slower passages. Tracks such as "Collapse", "Black Door Mine", "Godplayer", "I See Red", "Ironlung", "Ordinary Madness" and "Choice of a New Generation" demonstrate the band's willingness to push beyond conventional grindcore structures, incorporating dissonant arrangements, noise experimentation and unsettling atmospheres. The album also features a cover of the Germs' "Media Blitz", reinforcing Brutal Truth's connection to hardcore punk. Darker, more experimental and structurally adventurous than their debut, Need To Control remains a landmark recording in 1990s grindcore, illustrating how extreme music could develop greater complexity without sacrificing its raw brutality.
