PROTECTOR – Golem (1988)
Formed in Wolfsburg, Germany, in 1986, Protector emerged as one of the most ferocious bands of the German thrash metal underground, developing a particularly aggressive sound that bridged the gap between traditional Teutonic thrash and the emerging death metal movement. Released in 1988 through Atom H Records, Golem was their debut full-length album, following the Misanthropy EP (1987), and established their reputation for uncompromising speed, intricate riff arrangements and relentless brutality. Featuring Martin Missy's distinctive harsh vocals, Hansi Müller's razor-sharp guitar work, Ede Belichmeier's bass and Michael Hasse's explosive drumming, the album delivers ten tracks of savage death/thrash metal, including "Delirium Tremens", "Apocalyptic Revelations", "Golem", "Protector of Death", "Operation Plaga Extrema" and "Omnipresent Aggression". The closing track, "Space Cake", also features guest vocals from Sodom frontman Tom Angelripper. While sharing the aggression of early Kreator, Sodom and Destruction, Protector distinguished themselves through darker atmospheres, abrupt tempo changes and a heavier approach that anticipated elements of death metal. Golem remains a significant recording in the evolution of German extreme metal, particularly for listeners who appreciate the uncompromising intensity of Pleasure to Kill, Obsessed by Cruelty and Infernal Overkill.
