The Gallery were a German gothic metal and rock band formed in Dresden in 1994. Their early music combined melancholic gothic rock, metallic guitars and atmospheric keyboards, supported by both male and female vocals.
Although never as widely known as many of their European contemporaries, The Gallery developed a dramatic, romantic sound suited to listeners of Lacrimosa, Love Like Blood, Dreadful Shadows and early Theatre of Tragedy. These two CDs document the band’s formative gothic period before they later moved towards alternative rock.
1. Dreamscapes
Released in 1997 through Hall of Sermon, Dreamscapes was The Gallery’s debut album. It introduced a dreamy but sombre mixture of gothic rock, metal and symphonic atmosphere.
After the short opening piece “Ea,” songs such as “Unfaded Dream,” “Soporific,” “A Voyage into Infinity” and “Kalokagathia” unfold through melodic guitars, keyboards and contrasting vocals. The arrangements carry a distinctly late-1990s European gothic character: romantic, theatrical and filled with melancholy.
A strong starting point for listeners who enjoy atmospheric gothic metal beyond the genre’s better-known names.
2. Fateful Passion
Released in 1998, Fateful Passion followed quickly after the debut and presented a more focused version of The Gallery’s sound. The guitars have greater weight, but melody and gothic atmosphere remain central.
“A Wave of Mature Grain,” “This Urgent Denial,” “Vice of Mallorn” and “Preservation (It Wasn’t Meant to Be)” combine emotional vocals with dark, carefully layered arrangements. The album also reflects the band’s interest in themes of feeling, despair and fantasy.
Compared with Dreamscapes, Fateful Passion sounds more confident and direct. Together, the two albums provide an excellent introduction to this overlooked German gothic band.
