MASTAPLANN – Mastaplann (1993)

Mastaplann were a pioneering Filipino hip-hop group formed in the early 1990s, recognised for helping establish rap music within the Philippines' developing urban music scene. Combining American-inspired hip-hop, funk-driven rhythms, danceable grooves and a distinctly Filipino identity, the group emerged during a period when hip-hop culture was gaining momentum across Southeast Asia. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1993 through Universal Records, features eight tracks showcasing their energetic rapping, rhythmic delivery and mixture of party-oriented material and socially conscious lyrics. Highlights include "Bring Dat Booty", "Here Wee R", "Who Got Da Skills", "Is It Tyme" and "Freak Da Funk", while "Fix Da World Up" addresses social problems and prejudice, and "Manila I'm Home" and "Tumalon At Sumayaw" reflect the group's Filipino roots. The album blends old-school hip-hop sensibilities with pop rap accessibility, capturing the influence of early 1990s American rap while developing a regional character of its own. Mastaplann remains a notable recording from the formative years of Filipino hip-hop, representing a generation of artists who helped introduce the genre to a wider mainstream audience in the Philippines.
