Il Divo are a multinational classical crossover vocal group formed in the United Kingdom in 2003 by Simon Cowell. The original quartet brought together Swiss tenor Urs Bühler, American tenor David Miller, French singer Sébastien Izambard and Spanish baritone Carlos Marín.

Their signature sound places classically trained voices over pop songs, orchestral arrangements and romantic standards, often performed in Italian, Spanish, French and English. These four albums cover Il Divo’s original and most commercially successful period.

1. Ancora — CD + DVD, Japan Press, No OBI

Released in 2005, Ancora expanded the formula established on the debut with grander arrangements and a stronger multilingual repertoire.

Highlights include “Héroe,” “Isabel,” “Senza Catene,” “Ave Maria,” “Hasta Mi Final” and “Solo Otra Vez,” their version of “All by Myself.” Céline Dion joins the group on “I Believe in You (Je Crois en Toi),” giving the album one of its defining performances.

This Japanese CD+DVD edition adds visual material to the album. Although the OBI is missing, it remains the more desirable format for collectors.

2. Il Divo — Japan Press, No OBI

Released in 2004, Il Divo’s self-titled debut introduced their fusion of opera-trained vocals and familiar popular music.

“Regresa a Mí” transforms Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart” into an orchestral vocal showcase, while “Nella Fantasia,” “My Way,” “Mama,” “Passerà” and “Every Time I Look at You” establish the romantic, dramatic character that became their trademark.

The album is the best starting point for listeners discovering Il Divo. This is a Japanese pressing without its OBI.

3. Siempre

Released in 2006, Siempre continued Il Divo’s multilingual approach while allowing the individual voices to sound more naturally integrated as a group.

“Notte di Luce” reimagines The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin,” while “Desde el Día Que Te Fuiste” adapts “Without You.” “Caruso,” “Por Ti Seré,” “Somewhere” and “La Vida Sin Amor” balance familiar melodies with original material and sweeping orchestration.

A strong choice for listeners who enjoy Ancora and want more of Il Divo’s established classical-pop sound.

4. The Promise — CD + DVD, Japan Press, No OBI

Released in 2008, The Promise brought a broader selection of pop standards, original songs and sacred music into Il Divo’s repertoire.

“The Power of Love,” “Adagio,” “Hallelujah,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “She” and “Amazing Grace” receive large orchestral arrangements, while “La Promessa,” “Enamorado,” “Angelina” and “La Luna” were written specifically for the album.

The accompanying DVD includes performances filmed at the Coliseum and an interview with the group. This Japanese CD+DVD edition is missing its OBI but offers more content than the standard CD.
