(Used) ACE OF BASE cd collection The Sign The Bridge
Ace of Base are a Swedish pop group formed in Gothenburg by siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren with Ulf Ekberg. Their combination of reggae rhythms, Europop melodies and electronic production made them one of the most successful groups of the 1990s.
These four CDs contain the international breakthrough The Sign and three editions of its follow-up, The Bridge. The two Japanese pressings will be especially attractive to collectors.
1. The Sign
Released in 1993, The Sign was the North American version of the group’s debut album, Happy Nation, expanded and reconfigured for the international market.
“All That She Wants” introduced Ace of Base’s distinctive reggae-pop sound, while the title track became a worldwide number-one hit. “Don’t Turn Around” and “Living in Danger” continued their chart success, supported by “Young and Proud,” “Wheel of Fortune,” “Happy Nation” and “Waiting for Magic.”
The album balances bright melodies with slightly melancholic lyrics and minor-key arrangements. It remains the essential starting point for anyone discovering Ace of Base.
2. The Bridge
Released in 1995, The Bridge followed the enormous worldwide success of The Sign. It offers a broader sound and features substantial writing, production and vocal contributions from all four members.
“Beautiful Life” is an energetic Europop anthem, while “Lucky Love” provides a warmer reggae-pop melody. “Never Gonna Say I’m Sorry,” “My Déjà Vu” and “Perfect World” deliver immediate hooks, while “Ravine,” “Strange Ways” and “Angel Eyes” reveal a more reflective side.
More varied than the debut and an important second chapter in the group’s catalogue.
3. The Bridge (Japan Press, No OBI)
This Japanese pressing contains Ace of Base’s second album in a collectible regional edition.
The core programme includes the major singles “Beautiful Life,” “Lucky Love” and “Never Gonna Say I’m Sorry,” together with deeper tracks such as “Edge of Heaven,” “Wave Wet Sand,” “Whispers” and “Que Sera.”
Although the OBI is no longer included, the Japanese manufacturing and regional presentation still make this a worthwhile alternative for collectors.
4. The Bridge (Japan Press with OBI)
This is the more complete Japanese collectible edition of The Bridge, retaining its original OBI strip.
Musically, it presents the same combination of dance-pop, reggae rhythms and increasingly mature songwriting. The album demonstrates that Ace of Base had more to offer than a repetition of The Sign, with all four members contributing to its broader character.
For listeners interested mainly in the music, any edition of The Bridge is a strong purchase. For physical-format collectors, this Japanese pressing with OBI is the most desirable copy in the collection.
